CIFS offers poor directory traversing performance, and there have been
reports of large libraries taking minutes to open. Metadata is not used
in browse mode. Multiple root directories do not get merged while in
browse mode.
In general, there's just a lot of things that behave differently in
browse mode than they do in normal operation, and somehow a lot of users
manage to enable it without knowing. If you know what it means, and
understand what to expect, it's fine. However most don't, and so it
just ends up leading to confusion.
