Indeed. The NVidia proprietary driver blob does require a CPU with
CMOV support though -- something I learned much to my dismay when I
put my shiny new PCI card in my Via Epia motherboard and the driver
refused to load.

So, i686/Pentium Pro/Athlon is new enough. For example, I use a
Celeron (PIII) for my FE now.
