I use mythbuntu on an older computer (hp 7100 small form factor) and use
the powernowd (power now daemon) to throttle the pc down to .3mhz most
of the time. It will spike back up to 2.8mhz, but that keeps the power
down quite a bit. I also timeout and suspend to disk after 1.5 hours of
inactivity. Also, at midnight, I have a cron job to suspend the pc. By
doing that, I think I really made an impact, yet still got to use older
(CHEAP!) hardware.

My case is not warm at all using the powernow daemon, as it was before.
Both of those things can be found in the wiki.

I may not be as green as most, but I don't understand how people can get
their panties in a knot over an additional 40watts (MAX!), and yet leave
the AC running constantly, lights on everywhere, etc. Not to mention
the waste of throwing away old pcs that are perfectly capable. Then
again, I run and have run old hardware here for years.
