Well that's true - with VGA you have a digital to analog conversion, 
and then the TV redigitises it to drive the display. But also be 
aware that with HDMI, you may not be seeing what you sent. IIRC all 
the standard modes actually rescale the image - so you sent it a 
1920x1080 pixel image, the TV scales that up so it can throw about 
1/4 of it away. I really cannot imagine what the standard committees 
thought they were doing when they came up with that idea ! Surely it 
would have been much better to have whatever is generating the image 
to general a pixel-for-pixel description of what should be on the 
display ?

On some, but my no means all, TVs, you can turn this off and display 
what you send. It goes by different names depending on the 
manufacturer - it may be under "scaling", possibly under "overscan", 
or "full pixel mode", or ...

On my Samsung, it detects that it's a computer driving it and does two things :
1) It turns off the resampling.
2) It only presents the "computer" modes - ie it offers 60Hz, but not 50Hz.
