In fact, I think the case would be cloudier than that: the law (finally)
recognizes that these days, some devices need to make incidental local
copies of, say, a stream being received over the internet, *in order to
play them*, and these incidental copies are not construed as violating
copyright.
Exactly how strict those definitions are, I'm not certain.
But I don't think this is a brightline point anymore.
In any event, his inquiry could *also* be legally interpreted as "what
sort of player could I integrate with the Front Ends I already have connected
to TVs, so that I can play my rented NetFlix movies on one of those pieces
of hardware at a time".
Go back and read Sony v Universal and the 9th circuit decision that it
reversed: *both* agree that if there is a legitimate use, then no
contributory infringement can attach.
