Thanks for the quick and clear response.  I downloaded and installed
an updated package from ubuntu 11.10 development.  It is working now.

If anybody else needs the fix you can download the newer .deb from the
following url. . .
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+package/python-mysqldb
