Thanks for the replies. I have a daily cron job running

/usr/share/doc/mythtv-docs-0.24.1/contrib/maintenance/optimize_mythdb.pl.

I'll make sure I have the latest fixes and see what happens. When it
happened last night, I logged onto the backend and saw the load
average was at 3, though this soon reduced to 0.5 or so, while the
front end started again. Without watching the load instead of watching
tv I'm not sure how to find out what is making it busy.
