If you are running upstart (which you
probably are on 10.04) then have a look at: 

/etc/init/mythtv-backend.conf


If there you'll see "pre-start script". If you look at the link below
you'll see examples of how to add code either pre or post script so you can
run your stuff whenever you want relative to mythbackend.
