Brian, first off, there are known issues with running a backend without 
any tuners, and it's not a supported configuration.  (In the future, we 
will have recording split off from the backend to allow you to do so.)

Second, on a host that has no capture cards, you should use mythjobqueue 
/instead/ of mythbackend to run jobs.  So, just change your system to 
start mythjobqueue instead of mythbackend.

Granted, it may not help with the deadlocks, but at least you'll be 
running a supported configuration and you'll use 1/10 the resources that 
the backend uses (see
