If you are using pulseaudio and it is running:
With ubuntu you must use ALSA:pulse as audio device.

You must set the speaker configuration to stereo and uncheck AC3 and
DTS (no digital passthrough will work).

Now if you were using mythtv 0.24 you would have better alternatives.
