Recordings are all from PVR-500, so just SD data. As far as
competition, yeah, it looks like about six other wifi networks, all
too weak to access with my android phone, but the other half is using
a laptop downstairs via wifi ATM.

It may be worth the attempt to get a "N" card to try in the FE, but
IIRC, the router will downgrade to the least-common-denominator being
served, so I would need to get any/every other device upgraded to "N"
to get the best performance, correct?

Craig.

Or you could get a simultanous dual band router and an "N" card for the frontend that supports 5 GHz.
Then you could run all the other devices on 2.4 GHz and only the frontend on 5 GHz.

I have had good results when testing with a Linksys WRT-610N and an Intel WiFi Link 5300 on Windows.
I have had sustained speed in the region of 250 - 290 Mbps when copying large files between a Windows Home Server connected via cable to the Linksys and a Windows XP laptop connected via the Intel WiFi Link 5300 on 5GHz. When connected on 2.4 GHz the speed was lower, about 100 - 170 Mbps and there was much more variation in the sustained speed than on 5 GHz.

I have not tried to run a frontend via this, but I have tried it with 2.4 GHz "N" equipment which occationally worked even for HD (about 15 Mbps H.264 material) but most often did not work well even for SD.

The Linksys WRT-610N is a bit expensive but can be flashed with DD-WRT if that is of interrest.
