XFCE is a lighter desktop environment and is used by the ubuntu based
mythbuntu distribution and by xubuntu. It looks quite like GNOME.

Also look at LXDE.

When you talk about features of GNOME you dont require, what are you
referring to? Most environments offer similar feature sets and all can
run the same applications. You can always remove the apps you dont
want.
