[mythtv-users] Subtitle then Description duplication check giving surprising results

I'm struggling with a scheduler issue and it would be helpfull if I
understood the difference between the duplicate detection methods:
"Subtitle & Description" and "Subtitle then Description".

I've read the wiki page

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Duplicate_matching

but I have to say that though it might leave me better informed, I'm
non-the wiser.

It seems to me that if the Subtitle and Description both have to be
the same it doesn't matter whether you compare them together, or
separately?

Could someone be kind enough to provide a bit more detail - I'll
update the wiki myself (assuming I understand the explanation).

This is the Issue I'm having.

I've previously always used "Subtitle then Desctiption" when recording
series because otherwise repeats tended to cause multiple recordings.

Recently however I've had to change to "Subtitle then Description"
because new showings are being marked as "Previously Recorded" or
"Earlier Recording" even though no previous showing exists.  They
therefore aren't being scheduled to record.

I'm running  and old versioni of 0.21-fixes (0.21.20080304-1) and
haven't upgraded anything for ages so I'm assuming that either I've
got database corruption or something about the guide data has changed
(I'm using the rt_UK xmltv grabber).  There has been a bit of an
upheavel recently with the uk_rt feed and there do seem to be some
changes in the guide data.  I've noticed the series number appearing
in the subtitle field meaning every episode of a series has identical
Title and Subtitle fields. The description fields look nice and unique
though.

I did think of posting on the xmltv users forum but the xmltv data
looks right enough to me.  Here's one example of a new showing next
week that mythtv is marking as previously recorded if I use Subtitle
then Description duplicate detection.

<programme start="20101020210000 +0100" stop="20101020220000 +0100"
channel="channel4.com">
   <title>Grand Designs</title>
   <sub-title>series 10</sub-title>
   <desc lang="en">Kevin McCloud follows interior ..... </desc>
   <category lang="en">Home and property</category>
   <episode-num system="xmltv_ns"> . 5/12 . </episode-num>
   <subtitles type="teletext" />
 </programme>

I've trunctated the description field but, needless to say, there's no
previous recording with a matching description.

Any ideas?
