Linux and software built with security in mind denies access unless
specifically allowed.

You have to tell mythbuntu to configure mysql to allow remote
connection in the setup, or afterwards. what this does is simply
configure mysql user access to be allowed from all ip addresses in
addition to loopback. It is better to do is specifically indicate the
permitted range, or even more secure again is specific IP addresses;
especially when you have wifi around.
