I'd think that the devs would have more problems with having to "plow 
through" tons of settings to change a single one than the users, since 
developers are more likely to be making changes to a system.

But the devs are in a better position to know what the priorities are 
for all the different issues. Users tend to spout off about whatever 
impinged on their consciousness in the last 10 minutes.

Remember that most, if not all, of the devs are users as well, and any 
really obvious problem for users will effect them as well, if not more 
so.

Or, do the devs have a "production" machine for the family to use and a 
"development" machine to tinker with?

Or, is the deepest secret about  MythTV the fact that the dev's families 
use Tivos?
