No progress. It turns out that, after it assembled the drive the first time,
it started rebuilding sda2. On the next (CD) boot, it complained about sdd2
and repaired that. On the next (CD) boot, it assembled fine, but still
couldn't
boot off the HD.

mdadm says its clean. fsck says the filesystem is clean. But I'm still
getting:

[ 4.626461] EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
[ 4.695932] EXT3-fs error (device sda2): ext3_check_descriptors: Block
bitmap for group 1920 not in group (block 32832)!
[ 4.695939] EXT3-fs: group descriptors corrupted!
[ 5.037359] EXT4-fs (sdd2): Couldn't mount because of unsupported
optional features (4000000)

at boot. I'm beginning to think its more of an initrd issue.

I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts anyone has.
