Excellent!  Thanks to them, then, for doing the leg-work, and to you for

I agree, that would be a PITA.

OK.  This is after a fresh start of the frontend, preceded by running
alsamixer and hitting the Mute key 4x.  Went right into "Play Music" with
upconvert ON.  Sorry, it's a lot of text, but didn't want to omit anything

Curious - this probably has nothing to do with the sound issue, but the
log says that it's using  DB schema 1264.  On its first run after the
upgrade, it updated the schema to 1308, or so it said.  I have had NO
database problems since, and the DB health check under Mythweb is clean. 
FWIW.

That might well work.  If you'd like, I can post the log entries during an
episode of "flashing 5.1 LED, no sound during video playback", also.
