The hdaudio branch hasn't been merged. Hopefully early next week.

7.1 audio can only be sent as LPCM over hdmi. There is no solution
currently available on Linux that will let you passthrough e-ac3,
dts-HD and the like. And even on windows, it would only work with some
specific hardware (afaik, the ion platform doesn't support
passthrough).

5.1 dts and ac3 will of course.

My guess is that your typical atom in combination with vdpau would
have enough guts to decode your typical e-ac3 and send it as LPCM over
hdmi.
