The 'permission denied' trying to write to /dev/lcd0 even as root
sounds highly suspicious. Not sure what the fix would be though.

Just tried something... As a normal user, I get similar behavior. As
root, I get:

# echo foo > /dev/lcd0
-bash: /dev/lcd0: Device or resource busy

When you say "as root", you don't mean "sudo echo foo > /dev/lcd0", do
you? Because that's *not* the same...
