I installed trunk last night and encountered a similar problem. In my
case, when I would start a recording, the background image would
completely cover the screen, but I could see bits of the video playing
back underneath it. Pressing pause twice fixed it immediately.

I'm not sure why, but the issue went away completely when I switched
the paint engine from OpenGL to Qt in the Appearance setup page.
