I get where you're coming from, and I have 0 intention of ponying up for
an iphone dev kit, however...I've seen an app developed using HTML+CSS
with a side of ajax based on the jQTouch beta which was pretty cool.

Granted, I don't know if you can cause an iphone to play back videos from
such an app, but by developing it and self-hosting the app, Apple's app
store police have no control over it.

It's pretty slick when you see it in action.  I haven't done any dev work
with it (yet) but I'm thinking it might be "just the thing" for a MythWeb
iPhone remote control.
