Nope, its definitely not closed captions data.  That shows up as white and
at the top.

The puzzle to me is why it doesn't show up when mplayer plays it back.

Hmm, that's news to me. I'll test one of the videos with xine, my media
player of choice, and see if it's there or not. If not that would, IMO, mean
that mythtv has a playback issue.
