It depends on the usage pattern.  If you want to play back one video
at a time, and only want multiple drives for the purposes of larger
capacity, it really doesn't matter.  If you hook up 5 drives and 4 or
idle at any given time, you're going to see pretty much the same
performance as with a single drive.  You could probably support two or
three frontends playing different videos simultaneously.  Most home
users won't need to go beyond that.  If you're trying to set up a
video-on-demand service for a large hotel, that's obviously not going
to work.

Well, most motherboards have more than one USB controller already and
you can add more if it's a bottle neck.

This has almost no effect on performance of other devices on the bus.
