I use CygWin with the FVM window manager.  I use ssh with the -L option 
to run remote systems X applications without needing the CygWin X 
server.  For example, from a CygWin X window shell, enter "ssh -Y 
<username>@<hostname> xterm -ls" to start an xterm on the remote host. 
 From that xterm window you can start any X applications on the remote 
host and their windows will appear on your CygWin desktop.
