It sounds similar to the DISH receivers when they get into the "Press Select" 
mode, so I just send a select code before each channel change, so no possible 
conflict with channel changes.

If they want you to press a button every now and then it sounds like they may 
be getting ratings information and want to make sure you haven't just turned 
on PBS or CSPAN and gone out to dinner.

DISH does it so the receiver can check for updates, and the unit has to stop 
watching TV to do this. You can change the time of day when this happens, but 
you can't stop it.
