It's not necessarily a problem.  You need to have sufficient disk I/O
bandwidth and CPU cycles available to keep up with all of this.  If
your machine is so overloaded that it can't read from your tuners fast
enough, you'll start to lose chunks of your programs.

If you have reasonably modern hardware, it shouldn't be a problem.  If
you've stuffed four BTTV cards into a 486 and are doing software
encoding to an external USB hard disk (using a USB 1.1 bus) then your
results may be less than desirable.
