The script above didn't work for me.  Didn't spend much time on it.

Downloading and compiling this plugin did -

Enable the plugin and select script to run worked well.  Originally
was thinking of executing it from ssh session from my laptop, but
didn't need to.  Works fine on broadcast.

mythtvosd --template=scroller --scroll_text="New IM waiting..."
--bcastaddr="192.168.0.255"
