A front-end + back-end.

After some bludgeoning, things are working pretty well. It's running
mythbuntu 9.10 with the front-end using HDMI and the back-end using
PVR-USB2 and HVR-950Q tuners. I had to do the following:

- add an extra 1gb of ram (making a total of 2gb), the front-end
battling the back-end meant it had a habit of either swapping or X
screwing up with memory allocation

- do battle with the front end's sound (the recorder cards have sound
devices and that confuses things); I've set it to ASLA:hdmi:NVidia and
that seems to work

- configure /etc/udev/rules.d/ so that the USB devices gets consistent
names (in my case I've ota vs cable and raw vs mpeg2 video devices so
this matters)

- enable vdpau slim (I found the other options didn't work when there
was only 1gb of ram)

- unplug my third tuner (a second HVR-950Q), kernel problems; perhaps
I should dust off my HVR-1950.

- added an external 1TB drive

- I've yet to pluck up the courage to configure suspend/sleep/...

btw, there aret 6 usb ports (not 5), one, on a corner, is hidden under
a white cap. So in theory it could take 4 tuners + disk + IR.
