I answered from memory and forgot that the Visual Effects applet is for 
Gnome.  I can not get to my Mythbuntu machine at the moment, but it 
should have an applet in XFCE for Compiz.

I think it is here:
Applications->Settings->Settings Manager->Windows Manager Tweaks->Compositor

Turn it off and then try vnc again.
