You really shouldn't do a partial restore. Do a complete backup
followed by a complete restore.

If you do a partial restore, you're complicating the process
significantly, and the only benefit is that it will "feel" like it's
faster. But the attached script should do just as well, and will not
require additional work during the upgrade.***

Things I do recommend:
  a) If you're going from MythTV 0.21-fixes to 0.22-fixes, set your
frontend's theme to MythCenter or MythCenter-wide before making the backup
  b) Back up your database (
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore ) and make sure
you put the backup somewhere where you won't lose it
  c) When you install the new distro, use the exact same host name you
used for the previous install.
  d) Do a full restore (
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore#Database_Restore )
  e) If you changed the host name, do a host name change (
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore#Change_the_hostname_of_a_MythTV_frontend_or_backend
)
  f) Start mythtv-setup to do the database upgrade before starting
mythbackend, and once the upgrade completes, exit mythtv-setup and start
mythbackend(s) and any frontends

Mike

***The reason it feels faster is because you've re-installed your distro
and that cleaned up a bunch of garbage. It has nothing to do with the
partial restore.
