Oh, you are asking for trouble if you use the default /var/mythtv
directories for mythtv if they are not on a separate partition.  It is
best to completely distinguish mythtv SG directories from the default
OS directories.  What you are seeing is because /var is holding them
both, and since /var is important for any OS related function with a
"variable" amount of space, the upgrades are failing.

I would definitely carve out some space for mythtv and separate it
from /var, or at least make /var/mythtv a separate partition.
