At one time I had a VIA SP8000E which required the kernel Ethernet 
driver to be patched in order to not fail to resume. However, this was 
the VIA Rhine not VIA Velocity Ethernet driver, so I do not know whether 
or not it applies to your more recent Ethernet hardware.
