Just a wild guess, check the permissions on /dev/fw0 and /dev/fw1 or
maybe /dev/raw1394 (I think new kernels give the /dev/fw* devices, and
older kernels give /dev/raw1394).

Even if that isn't it, it looks like a permission problem.
