I've seen where applications having the file open scrambles the file
during a crash. I'm not sure if it's the application or the file system
that does it. I use journaling file systems over non-journaling for
system and home directories where possible, but that still doesn't
appear to prevent it 100% of the time. So I've gotten into the habit of
mounting all the file systems that I possibly can as read-only (ro).
It's a extra step to remount them read-write (rw) when I need to do
software maintenance but better safe than sorry. Mounting ro probably
wont work for a home directory, but what you could do is symlink the
file in the home directory to a real file on another partition that has
been mounted ro.
