This is probably OK.  If you already have a lirc installation, put this 
file in the same place as lirc_dev.ko.

Same place as lirc_dev.ko.  The problem most likely is that after you 
installed the modules you did not run "depmod" so the kernel could find 
the new modules.

OK as long as the file name does not end in ".ko".  I usually use .korig 
so the kernel will ignore (e.g. lirc_dev.korig).
