Turns out it's a Ubuntu thing. For details, see

Short version: wide links support is now off by default. Adding the
following lines to smb.conf fixes the problem:

follow symlinks = yes
wide links = yes
unix extensions = no


Apparently this is a security problem, but for the moment, I'd rather
have my system work.
