I have the same machine for one of my frontends, though mine runs Gentoo
underneath.  With x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-190.53-r1, all I had to do was
pick up an HDMI-to-DVI cable to hook it up to a Vizio L30 (a 30" LCD that runs
at 1280x768 native resolution).

Can you start a normal X session?  I can't imagine why X would work and MythTV
wouldn't, but it's worth verifying that it does. The only thing I can see that
might cause MythTV to act up is if it's set to render the interface with OpenGL
and there's something broken with 3D rendering on your setup, but working VGA
output indicates that that's not it.

You mentioned that you're using an older video driver.  You might want to try
something newer.  I can't speak to what Ubuntu offers; while 190.53 is
keyworded ~amd64 and ~x86 on Gentoo, it's worked well for me.
