I use VLC installed on my work laptop for exactly that purpose. I
have a user job that runs does a lossless mythtranscode to cut
commercials and then uses ffmpeg to compress to a h.264 file with mp3
audio. The user job drops that into a directory which I copy to my
work laptop before a big trip. VLC plays the files back fine. Myth
has been getting the commercials 99% right so I trust it do auto-cut
the commercials.
