Getting OT, but... The slower the baud rate, the longer the distance.  
We've run differential voltage serial at 120 baud (modified RS485) over 
6 miles over ordinary unshielded twisted pair with no problems.

Higher baud rates -> shorter cable runs, more sensitive to noise, etc.
