How long ago were you testing those drivers (and how old were they
at the time)? In January this year, at least one person thought
either the open source or proprietary ATI drivers put the 780G
ahead of the nVidia 8200 with proprietary drivers (for people
wanting an HTPC):

The X.org wiki currently says the following of the ati driver's
support for the HD 3200 (which is included in the 780G):
* 2D: accelerated (EXA), stable
* XVideo: accelerated and tear free, stable
* 3D: experimental ...
