..... I have bitten
the bullet and installed the JYA packages for VDPAU support.
Everything plays quite nicely though there have been a few instances
where the frontend barfed when playing a recorded video.

Sounds consistent with my experience.  What are the errors you get?  I was planning to put up an error report for NVIDIA with the 
error files they specify (see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14) however if you were to beat me to it then I 
would not be offended!
