Remember, also, that there's a setting:

Theme cache size
Maximum number of prescaled themes to cache.

in mythfrontend settings under Appearance settings, which would allow 
you to hold on to (each of) your (old) caches even if you switch themes 
frequently.  It will not reuse the cached images from the other theme, 
but it will prevent mythfrontend from deleting the old cache outright 
when you switch themes so that if you switch back, you have your old 
cache in place.
