Of course not.

The local cable outfit is also running ads accusing the satellite companies 
of "aggressively processing" their signals, the implication being that the 
cable company doesn't, I guess.

Anything "aggressive" is obviously bad, right?

As to whether Canadian cable companies will have to provide a free simple box 
for basic channels, I don't know, but they will have to deal with the 
negative PR aspects if they try to make everyone pay a rental fee.

In general I think the Canadian outfits are more customer friendly thanthwe US 
ones, at least that's what it seemed like to me when I used to live in 
Ontario (Peterborough). We were allowed to purchase our own converters for 
use on that system (though this was back in the mid-70s).

On the bright side, the cheap basic boxes did lead to a metter solution for 
scanning digital channels.
