FWIW The only laptops that I know about or care about are IBM Thinkpads.
and I use one of mine as a backend.
I go DCH3200 -> firewire > Thinkpad.
This buys me two things, a extra capture station and a almost totally silent
means of recording shows that happen during bedtime hours.
Many new "vistas" open up as soon as you use a docking station.
For example it's much nicer to keep the display powered off and the
computer alive in standby this way.
Mine stays cool and takes very little power used that way.
If you wanted to do a IR this way you could just use the RS ir module and
wire it to the on button in the dock and thereby avoid "butchering" or even
opening up the LT.
I do have a lot to learn/figure out about transfering the recorded shows to my
other boxes though.
My best,
Bert
