I experienced the same issues in the past. My guest would be that you 
have VBI (Teletext) enabled in the recordings. This somehow gets 
embedded in the mpeg2 file, making it unplayable in most players (except 
mythfrontend). As soon as I turned off VBI, I had no more issues with my 
recordings.
