I saw exactly the same behaviour when I last tried to use hdd spin  
down, which was probably a couple of years ago. I would imagine that  
on the first attempt, the front end times out while the disks are  
spinning up, but on the second attempt you're OK.

That doesn't help you much, other than providing a "me too" data point.
