Thanks, but that didn't tell me whether the kernel was i386, i686, or
x86_64, just the kernel version # -- (2.6.28.15 IIRC -- on another
system ATM).

Under Fedora there was an rpm command that would extract and report
the answer, but rpm isn't an ubuntu tool, so...
