I find using the Google search engine most efficient.
In the Google search window, type:
site:gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/
Followed by a space and your searchwords.
site:gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/ "search the list" find answer
Now you can use modifiers like - and quotes and things to refine your search.
<http://www.google.com/#hl=en&num=100&newwindow=1&q=site%3Agossamer-threads.com%2Flists%2Fmythtv%2Fusers%2F+%22search+the+list%22+find+answer&aq=f&aqi=&oq=&fp=8ec9ea851cee2c5b>
Works with many FTP sites, forums, and lists.
