Keep in mind when Myth development started the Wiimote didn't exist yet,
gyro mice didn't exist, and wireless mice were rare and clunky. (Who
wants a mousepad in their lap when they're watching TV?) The only
practical way to control something like this was with a remote, which
nicely jibed with the way everyone expected to control A/V gear. Using
a mouse with a remote under LIRC means moving the cursor around with
arrow buttons, which is unbelievably tedious, so using keyboard commands
were a practical way to go.

The situation has changed somewhat now, but a good mouse interface with
gestures will probably have to wait for someone who really cares about
it to write the code. I'm also not sure it would be that great for WAF.
(OK, honey, to fast forward you wiggle the mouse *this* way, and to
jump back you wiggle the mouse this slightly different way...)
