The optional patches listed on the wiki are my best attempt at solving
that problem, but even they do not solve it 100% of the time. They
help a lot, but I still have a 1 second sleep at the end of the
channel change script, just to make sure --- but I don't use LiveTV,
so I don't care how long the channel change takes ;-)

The real problem comes down to how quickly your STB produces stable
video/audio after a channel change. If the HD-PVR is told to start
recording when there is no video or audio on it's inputs, it gets a
bit confused. Those optional patches query the HD-PVR and wait for it
to report a valid video resolution, before continuing on to the
"recording" phase. Several people that use the HD-PVR for LiveTV,
report that those patches are virtually mandatory for anything
approaching smooth operation.

Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
